In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi and U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg announced that the Justice Department has increased efforts to protect American seniors from schemes that cost victims billions of dollars, often depleting their life savings. In the past few months, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia has prosecuted several fraudsters who targeted the elderly as well as conducted outreach to educate law enforcement about these schemes.

Narcotics Trafficker Who Brokered Cross-Country Fentanyl Sales Sentenced to 75 Months in Federal Prison

Melvin Edward Allen, Jr., 39, of the District of Columbia, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court to 75 months in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking conspiracy which distributed hundreds of thousands of lethal fentanyl-laced pills from Southern California to destinations throughout the United States, including Washington D.C. Allen was one of 24 co-defendants arrested over the course of 2023 in D.C., Virginia, Maryland, San Diego, and Los Angeles and charged in the conspiracy.

South Florida Medical Providers Agree to Pay $810,301 to Resolve Allegations of Fraudulently Billing Medicare

Vascular and Interventional Specialists, LLC (VIS); Vascular and Spine Institute, Inc. (VSI); Oscar Sosa, M.D.; and Osmany DeAngelo, D.O. have agreed to pay $810,301 to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by submitting claims for medically unnecessary percutaneous transluminal angioplasties (PTA)—a procedure that is performed to increase blood flow through a diseased or abnormally narrowed vessel.
